Normally one of the first things you hear from experienced photographers serving nuggets of wisdom to their disciples is ‘Avoid shooting between 10am and 4pm, always go for the golden hour to capture stunning images’ – By sticking to this foolproof rule one can avoid the curse of the sun god – having to return home to a bunch of washed out pictures lacking any contrast or ‘3D pop’. Of course I decided to challenge this. This is how I ended up with this majestic portrait of the magnificent Corvus corone aka the terribly named carrion crow (seriously, that is a terrible name for this beauty that only occasionally indulges in some fresh carrion). The harsh lighting of the middayish sun reveals the details in the jet black plumage that otherwise remains hidden and hard to recover while editing. I managed to capture several frames in succession thanks to this not-fully-adult-yet naiive guy (or a girl, I’m not sure) who hasn’t yet developed a fear of scary hairless primates.
